Friends of the River Axe

Friends of the River Axe is a community group working to protect and enhance the River Axe and its tributaries.

We tackle pollution, restore wetlands, and support biodiversity – helping species like otters and kingfishers thrive.

Through partnerships, education and hands-on volunteering, we improve river health and promote nature-based solutions. We’re people of the place, speaking up for the River.

We bring together numerous river-related community groups, businesses, organisations and ordinary citizens – to make a difference within the Axe Catchment

The River Axe is a very special river. She is renowned for her meanders, the disconcerting mouthless river lamprey, and startlingly bright, green water weeds.

The Axe has some of the highest environmental protections, and yet it is officially classified by Natural England as in an unfavourable condition and declining.

We love helping others so if you are worried about your river and want to make things better please get in touch, and we’ll happily share our experiences. Our emphasis is less on talk and more on action – and at pace. The Axe Catchment spans East Devon, South Somerset and West Dorset, so no matter where you live, get in touch friendsoftheriveraxe@gmail.com

“Storm overflows were meant for emergencies. In the River Axe they have become routine — and that is a political and corporate choice.”
